The format

What Is HIIT, and Why the “Afterburn”?

HIIT alternates short, hard intervals with brief recovery. Because you work near your limit and then repeat, your body keeps using oxygen at an elevated rate after class — what exercise science calls excess post-exercise oxygen consumption, or EPOC. That’s the “afterburn” you hear about.

In practice, it means a 45 to 50 minute class delivers a training effect that would take much longer at a steady pace. It’s the most time-efficient class on our schedule, which is why the 5:30 PM slots fill with people coming straight from work.

Our coaches scale the work so the room can train together at different levels, and they’ll show you how to adjust any movement before the clock starts.

Your first class

What to Expect

  1. 01 — Arrive

    Get there 10 minutes early

Check in at the front desk and tell the coach it’s your first HIIT class so they can keep an eye on your form.

  2. 02 — Warm up

    Movement prep together

The class warms up as a group and the coach walks through each station before the first interval.

  3. 03 — Work

    Intervals, 45 to 50 minutes

Hard efforts with short rests. Go at your pace; every movement has an easier and a harder version.

  4. 04 — Recover

    Use what’s already included

Head into the infrared sauna, the cold plunge, or red light therapy before you leave.

Good to know

Is HIIT Right for You?

Some experience helps

HIIT moves quickly, so it suits people who already have a base of training. Newer to the gym? Start with another class or a few personal training sessions first.

What to bring

Training shoes, water, and a towel. Premium and Inclusive members can pick up a towel at the front desk. That’s it — we have the equipment.

Scaled for the room

Every interval has options. Coaches adjust load, pace, and range so you can train hard without forcing a movement that doesn’t feel right.

Train hard, recover properly

The Part Most Gyms Leave Out

HIIT is demanding by design, and what you do after class matters as much as the intervals. At TruSelf, recovery is built into the same visit and the same membership: cold plunge, infrared sauna, contrast therapy, red light therapy, and the Hyperice Recovery Room.

No second membership, no driving across town. Finish your intervals, then take fifteen minutes to recover before you head home.

FAQ

HIIT Class FAQs

How long is a HIIT class?
HIIT classes run 45 to 50 minutes, including the group warm-up and cool-down.
When are HIIT classes held?
Monday and Wednesday at 5:30 PM, and Saturday at 9:00 AM. You can see the full timetable on our class schedule.
Is HIIT included with my membership?
Yes. Group fitness classes are included with every TruSelf membership, with the free 3-day guest pass, and with a One Day membership for that day’s classes.
Do I need to book in advance?
Reserve your spot in the TruSelf Sporting Club app so the coach knows how many to set up for. Walk-ins are welcome when there’s room.
Is HIIT good for beginners?
Some training experience helps, because the class moves quickly. If you’re just starting out, a few personal training sessions or a lower-intensity class first will make HIIT far more enjoyable.
What should I bring to class?
Training shoes, water, and a towel. We provide all the equipment, and Premium and Inclusive members can pick up a towel at the front desk.
What is the afterburn effect?
After hard intervals your body keeps consuming oxygen at an elevated rate while it recovers, known as excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC). It’s why short, intense sessions can deliver a strong training effect.
Can I use the recovery amenities after class?
Yes, and we’d encourage it. Depending on your plan you can use the infrared sauna, cold plunge, red light therapy, and the Hyperice Recovery Room in the same visit.
How do I try a class?
Start with a free 3-day guest pass, which includes group classes. Stop by 5125 Waring Rd or call 619-431-5407 with any questions.
