The basics
What Is Red Light Therapy?
Red light therapy, sometimes called photobiomodulation or low-level light therapy, uses LED panels that emit red and near-infrared light onto the skin. There’s no heat, no UV, and no downtime. You sit or lie in front of the panel for your session, and that’s it.
It’s become a common fixture in gyms, recovery studios, and wellness spaces. Research into how it works is ongoing and results vary from person to person, so we’d rather tell you what a session is actually like than make promises about what it will do for you.
At TruSelf, we treat it the way we treat the cold plunge and the sauna: one option inside a broader recovery routine, available to try, easy to skip if it isn’t for you.
Fitting it in
How Members Use It in a Recovery Routine
After lifting
Finish a strength session, then use your red light time as a cool-down before heading out.
On a contrast day
Contrast work first, then red light, then the Normatec boots.
On rest days
A standalone stop on an off day, often paired with stretching or mobility work.
Before a hard session
Some members prefer it as part of their warm-up routine rather than a cool-down.

One membership, one visit
Stack Your Recovery Under One Roof
TruSelf isn’t a med spa with a gym attached. It’s a full-service San Diego gym where recovery happens to be genuinely built out. You can lift, take a group class, plunge, sauna, use the Recovery Room, and sit under the red light panel in a single visit, on one membership, without driving anywhere else.
Any one recovery tool is a small input. Having all of them in one place, five minutes from home, is what makes people actually use them.
Safety
Is Red Light Therapy Safe? What to Know First
Red light therapy is generally well tolerated, but “generally” is doing real work in that sentence. It isn’t right for everyone, and we’re not the right people to tell you whether it’s right for you.
Talk with a qualified healthcare professional before using red light therapy if you:
- Have any medical condition, or are under a doctor’s care for one
- Are pregnant or may be pregnant
- Take medications or use topical products that increase light sensitivity (some antibiotics, acne treatments, diuretics, and others are photosensitizing; ask your pharmacist if you’re unsure)
- Have a history of skin cancer, or skin lesions you haven’t had evaluated
- Have an eye condition, or have had recent eye surgery
- Have a seizure disorder or are sensitive to bright or flashing light
- Simply aren’t sure whether it’s appropriate for you
At the club: follow the posted session guidelines and our team’s instructions, don’t stare directly into the panel, wear protective eyewear (bring your own or purchase a pair at the front desk), and stop your session and let staff know if anything feels off, such as discomfort, dizziness, or skin irritation.
Red light therapy at TruSelf Sporting Club is offered as a wellness amenity. It is not medical advice, medical treatment, or a substitute for evaluation, diagnosis, or treatment by a licensed medical professional. Nothing on this page is intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease or medical condition. Individual experiences vary. Consult a qualified healthcare provider before beginning red light therapy or any new wellness or recovery practice, particularly if you have a medical condition, are pregnant, or take medications that may increase light sensitivity.
